Ideas around Goals ...a discrepancy-creating process Goal setting is actually a discrepancy-creating process, in that setting a goal acknowledges our discontent with the status quo. Timperley et al, 2007 “goal setting works by creating a discrepancy between what is currently happening and some desired future state” Robinson, Hohepa, and Lloyd (2009 p.96)
Goals can give focus Especially when they are SMART Specific Measurable Achievable Relevant Time focussed “Goal setting channels one’s energies into determining ways in which goals will be achieved and allows one to prioritise actions in the face of multiple demands on one’s time.” Bishop, O’Sullivan and Berryman (2010 p. 55)
Goals can motivate people to be critically reflective if 3 conditions are met • Capacity to meet the goal from current resources or from the support received while pursuing the goal • Commitment to the goal takes place when individuals understand and value the goal • Specificityallows one to judge progress and adjust one’s performance.
Goals should also be considered against GPILSEO How will our ownership of the goal impact upon: • Evidence • Spread • Leadership • Pedagogy • Institutions • Goal
Consider this NZ school goal against the SMART and GIPLSEO criteria By the end of term 3 we will consider patterns of Māori students’ participation and achievement across curriculum areas to identify the influences of effective teaching against success in NCEA Level 1. In term 4 we will then work with middle managers to co-construct proactive approaches that may include adapting structures, pedagogies, resources and professional development to better enable teachers to support students’ performance in NCEA next year.
