Teacher Candidates: Background Information • Transitioning to Traditional Age • First Generation College Students • Cohorted Program • Two Degree Programs: ECE and Elem Ed • All Methods Courses require field/practicum placements and service learning placements • Placed in University Partnership Schools for 3 courses • Extensive Periods of Time in Placement

Walk & Talk Kokomo DayEngaging the Community -70 education students at 35 locations in Kokomo -Examples: grocery stores, restaurants, retail stores, parks… - -Students passed out custom made parent guides for each location, providing parents way of engaging children in their environment in order to promote early literacy and developmental awareness
Young Author’s ConferenceEngaging the Community cont. -Collaboration with Kokomo Area Reading Council -Annual community event to showcase children’s writing in preschool, elementary and middle school -More than 2000 persons in attendance -Students create interactive thematic displays where parents can obtain a booklist spanning infancy-middle school. -Examples: dinosaurs, transportation, cooking, jungle, conservation
Early Childhood FairEngaging the Community cont. • Over 500 children and their families attended • Purpose to raise awareness/Week of the Young Child • Activities from birth-5 yrs for children • Promote health, enrichment, and service/resources represented (e.g. library, hospital, childcare centers, etc.)
Children’s Resource RoomsEngaging Populations in Crisis • Three rooms created collaborating resources from university student, faith-based, and local business resources • Over the course of 3 years, students have provided developmentally appropriate resources/supplies for families/children in crisis care situations

Prop BoxesEngaging Educators -Students created and donated prop boxes of varying themes to Childcare Solutions (a resource available to all childcare providers/centers and parents), the Domestic Violence Shelter, directly to childcare centers -Purpose to strengthen imaginative dramatic play that mirrors real world experiences -Theme examples include: car wash, gardening, picnic/camping, etc. Veterinarian sample (right)
Operation Iraqi School SuppliesEngaging the World - Initiative to create school supply packets for U.S. soldiers to distribute to Iraqi children in a gesture of good will. - Reputable project created by actor Gary Sinise. Non- political; Child-centered. - IU Kokomo students collected over 100 packets that were sent to support Iraqi children in crisis.
Take Back the Night/Angel WalkEngaging the Community/World in Crisis • Students raise money, create and donate prop boxes, and participate in rally and walk in order to raise awareness about domestic abuse and its effects on children
