About Me! • From St. Louis, grew up in Kirkwood • Graduated from Mizzou in 2006 with a degree in Elementary Education • Completed my Master’s Degree in Special Education, from Webster University this past May • I am getting married on June 8, 2013…soon to be Mrs. Nierman • Experience: 4 years in Parkway (1st and 3rd grade), 3rd year at Glenridge (2nd grade). • Professional Development-Co-Teaching Training through SSD, Autism Conferences, Lucy Calkins Writing Conference, Teachers College Writing Institute (2 summers), Nat’l Science Teachers Association Conference, Member of District Literacy Committee (3rd year), Lab Classroom • Leadership Program participant (the next 2 years)

Writing Workshop • Mini-Lessons • Daily Independent Writing • Student Conferences and Small Strategy Groups • Partner Work • Sharing Writing • Publishing Our Writing **Each 2nd grade classroom will invite parents to 1 writing celebration during the year! Each classroom will invite parents to a different unit in order to best utilize our space, but all classrooms will experience this wonderful opportunity! Please join 2D on November 20th from 10-11:00 a.m. for our Fiction Writing Celebration!
Language/Word Study • Spelling & Language-Imbedded within all areas of the Reading and Writing Workshop! -Pretest on Monday, test on Friday for those who did not pass the pretest. Assess the transfer of spelling within daily writing. • Vocabulary-Imbedded within read alouds, guided reading, and all content areas.
Mathematics • Implementation of our new curriculum Math In Focus…we will be learning together! (Handout with information on your child’s desk.) • Piloted the program last year-had very positive experiences and outcomes for ALL students. • Teachers will continue to have Math in Focus PD throughout the year to work through the effective implementation of the new curriculum. Practices that will continue: • FastMath to improve fact fluency • Added support through our Gifted and Math Specialists
Elementary Mathematics Night • The purple flyer on your child’s desk. • Presentation for parents to allow you to learn more about the new curriculum. • Offering 3 different dates, so you may choose the best night for you to attend (one at each elementary school).
