Metabolic syndrome (MetS) • Abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, glucose intolerance. • 25% of the world’s adults have MetS • People with MetS are twice as likely to die from, and 3x times as likely to have CVD . • People with MetShave a 5x- greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes • Up to 80% of the 200 million people with diabetes globally will die of cardiovascular disease IDF.org,Grundy S Lancet 2005

MetS in SAI, an at risk population, and focus on their children
Results and Conclusion SAI children with one parent with the MetS had 24% lower levels of SHBG that increased to 55% if both parents were affected. Characteristics of the MetS are present in children of SAI origin as early as 5-9 years of age. SHBG may prove to be a useful marker for MetS in preadolescent children
