  3. Macaroni penguins and the Royal penguins are similar • South Georgia, Crozet, Kerguelen, Heard & McDonald Islands. • large breeding colonies

  4. There are around 24 million adults • The name came from English explorers in the mid 18th century. • A young man named “Macaroni” who wore flashy feathers in his hat. • "Yankee Doodle"

  5. They build a nest by scraping a shallow hole in mud or gravel among rocks. • Two eggs • 1st is smaller and usually don’t hatch • 2nd is larger and more likely to hatch. • The progress of keeping the egg warm, is done by both male and female in long shifts. • The egg usually hatches within 33 to 37 days.

  6. After the chick hatches the male cares for it for 23 to 25 days • The female brings food daily. • The parents will feed them every 1 to 2 days until they have their adult feathers and are ready to go on their own. • Macaroni penguins eat mostly krill with small amounts of squid.
