  2. Multiplying Fractions: Is the product ALWAYS smaller than the fractions (factors)? Meaning, is this true for all fractions?

  4. So how do we multiply decimals?

  5. Do NOT line up the decimals! The decimal places are growing and growing!

  6. Why is this happening? • We are multiplying hundredths times tenths: • So, the answer must be in thousandths!

  7. Let’s see that again: hundredths times tenths = thousandths! The other multiplication stuff works like it always did.

  8. Multiplying Fractions: Multiplying Decimals: If the factors (fractions OR decimals) are LESS than 1 then the product will be smaller!

  9. Multiplying Fractions: Multiplying Decimals: If one of the factors (fractions OR decimals) is greater than 1 than the product will be bigger than one of the fractions/decimals? If BOTH are bigger than 1 than the product will be bigger!!

  10. How do you know how many decimal places to put in the answer? • Trick: • Count up the place values after the decimal point in the problem. • If there are 3 place values after the decimal points in the factors then your answer needs to be in the thousandths place…needs 3 decimal places.
