History • The first traces of human settlement found in Tallinn's city center by archeologists are about 5000 years old. • In 1050 the first fortress was built on Tallinn Toompea. • In 1219 Tallinn was conquered by Danes. • In 1248 Tallinn was granted town status and became a member of the Hanseatic League. • From 1561 to 1710 Tallinn belonged to theSwedish Kingdom and the Great Northern War in 1710 surrendered to Russian Empire. • In 1918 Tallinn became the capital of Estonian Republic.
Ülemiste Elder There is a legend of Ülemiste Elder (Ülemiste vanake), who lives in the Ülemiste Lake and if anyone should meet him he is belived to ask: “Is Tallinn ready jet?” If the answer is “yes” then he would flood the city. Thus, the correct answer will be “No, there is much to be done jet”. This tale is sometimes viewed as an explanation why Tallinn is building/growing all the time.
