  1. Abortion pills: What are the side effects and when should I take them? What are abortion pills? Abortion pills, which generally refer to two drugs -- mifepristone (Mifeprex) and misoprostol (Cytotec) are taken together to end a pregnancy. This combination is also known as medical abortion, and is FDA-approved for use up to 70 days of gestation. This means it can be used within 70 days (10 weeks) of the first day of your last period. Some health care providers may prescribe these drugs at 11 weeks of pregnancy. This regimen usually includes an extra dose of misoprostol. However, a medical abortion is not for everyone. For example, you may not be eligible if your pregnancy is outside of your uterus (called an ectopic pregnancy), if you have bleeding problems, or if you are using an intrauterine device (IUD), among others. During the first 10 weeks of pregnancy, cells in your ovaries secrete a hormone called progesterone to prepare the lining of your uterus for pregnancy. Wait 24 to 48 hours, then take 800 mcg (four 200 mcg tablets) by placing two tablets in each cheek pouch (the space between the tooth and cheek). Keep the medicine in each cheek pouch for 30 minutes, then rinse off any leftovers with a glass of water. If you are 71 to 77 days pregnant, you will usually repeat the same dose of misoprostol 4 hours later. After completing your medication regimen, you will need to see your healthcare provider again in about 1-2 weeks. How long does the abortion pill take to work? After taking both medicines, it usually takes about 2-24 hours for the pregnancy to leave your body. In some cases, you may still be pregnant or you may not have completely evacuated all the tissues in your body. That's why it's important to follow up with your healthcare provider. If so, they will discuss your options with you, which may include another dose of medication or surgery. What are the common side effects of the abortion pill? A medical abortion can cause unpleasant side effects, especially after taking misoprostol. Side effects usually begin within 2-24 hours of administration. It's best to take misoprostol where you feel comfortable and where you have everything you need. It might be a good idea if you can plan ahead and clear your schedule for that day (and possibly the next).
