What are the criteria for a good persuasive essay? • A good persuasive essay clearly states your opinion on a topic. • A good persuasive essay includes examples and other evidence to describe the points in support of your position. • A good persuasive essay addresses possible arguments against your position. • A good persuasive essay uses correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.

  3. 1. Let’s get this straight! Be very clear when stating your opinion on a topic. If you choose to use sarcasm or irony to help make your point, be very careful that it will not be misinterpreted.

  4. 2. And I should care because…? Be sure to include examples and other evidence to help you support your claim. You’re not likely to persuade others to your way of thinking just because you say so. Convince them!

  5. 3. No, sir. You are mistaken. Be sure to address at least three possible arguments against your position on a topic. Don’t allow your audience to ask, “But what about this?”

  6. 4. Follow the rules! The writer follows the rules of writing (e.g., complete sentences, punctuation, capitalization, word usage, and organization).

  7. The Steps to Follow Step 1: Read the prompt Step 2: Choose a side. Step 3: Make a circle map listing all the reasons you believe would make people agree with you. Step 4: Pick the best 3 reasons and organize them into a flow map Step 5: Write your 6 paragraph essay

  8. What goes in each paragraph? Introduction: • Hook • Strong Opening Statement • State your argument • List your three reasons 2nd Paragraph • Discuss your first reason with 2-3 supporting details (least important reason)

  10. What goes in each paragraph? 5thparagraph (OPTIONAL) • Anticipate the opposing argument and deal with it in this paragraph. ( Pick one – three.) 6th paragraph • Conclusion: offer practical steps to solve the problem or take action. Re-state the problem.
