~ JULY 2012 QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER ~ Culinary GARDEN UPDATE Resident Care Notes REORGANIZING OUR ORGANIZING Now that the resident medicine cabinets have been installed and stocked, we are currently going through and reorganizing them with stackable baskets. Also included in our reorganization is a review of our medication process for new orders, reorders, changed orders and deleted orders. It’s good to have things in order, don’t you think? We are definitely in the growing season now! Our tomatoes are loaded with blossoms and tomato buds and the squash are spreading their “wings” throughout the garden. We are also getting ready to do some herb harvesting - in fact the parsley has already been made into a pesto for an upcoming ziti salad. Pretty soon we’ll need to do some resident recruiting for harvesting our produce. HEALING HEARTS Loss is difficult for everyone but especially so for our residents who may have experienced the loss of their home, a loved one, independence, physical ability – just to name a few. Beginning July 11th at 10:00AM our residents are welcome to join Rev. Joseph Atchinson from McLaren who will be reaching out to our residents in this new support group, Healing Hearts. It is our sincerest hope that participating in Healing Hearts will help heal the hearts of those who carry a sadness in their life. Thought for the Summer "A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken" J.Dent
Activity Happenings HONOR THY MOTHER & THY FATHER & THY VETERANS In that line of thinking we celebrated Mothers,Fathers & Memorial days with special activities and meals. Our Sheffield Mothers each received a flowering plant to brighten their apartment and our Sheffield Fathers a special “hamburg & fries” sweet treat put together by our baking club. On Memorial Day we recognized the veterans of Sheffield with a special service of song, prayer and gratitude for their service to our country and the many blessings of freedom we enjoy each day. IT’S A BABY BIRD…OR TWO…OR THREE You are welcome to visit the latest additions to Sheffield – three new baby birds who are adding some new “tweets” to our aviary. Building and Grounds • BE COOL & BE SAFE OUT & ABOUT & INDOOR FUN Sometimes it’s just good to get out and about – like visiting the Butterfly Garden, road trips to Mussel Beach and Baskin Robbins for ice cream, and a spring fever Loons baseball game. If we did stay indoors it was to enjoy the Hawaiian Luau, Sailor Social, Pizza party, Fondue party, Uno card game and crafts like making tie dye and leaf print shirts, spring wreaths, shadow box welcome signs and making and delivering May Day baskets on May Day. On our lazy days we enjoyed the new 60” flat screen TV and surround sound system in the Community room for movie day, snacks included. Remember those nights at the drive in movies – well so do we as we reminisced about the good old days and some of our favorite movies and memories. Please remember to “be cool” by closing your apartment door to stay comfortable in your apartment during these hot days of summer. Also we need to begin practicing the fire safety tip of keeping apartment doors closed at all times and seasons. During our most recent state fire inspection we were cited for our resident apartment doors being propped open which can be a hazard in the event of a fire. So please help us be cool as well as safe by keeping your door closed. And just in case you forget our staff may come by and close your door just as a friendly reminder.
Facility News • REVIVE-REFRESH-REPLANT Happy Birthday! July 12th Frieda Evans, 19thAlvinaWackerle, 23rd Lorene Buday August 3rd Agnes Gordon, 4th Ruth Claes, 21st Alice Wirt, 22nd Art Hagen, 23rd Alice Young, 26th Marian Hammond 29th Evelyn Klimmek September 3rd Frances Ivan, 7th Lenore Finlan, 17th Connie Follis 27th Gladys Brisbois 30th Earl Bublitz turns 95! Last year we invested in our center courtyard and completed a wonderful face lift. We appreciate the many compliments we have received and are happy it has added some enjoyment for our residents. At that time we also requested that no feeders, ornaments or hanging plants be placed in the courtyard and we have appreciated your assistance with our request. Later this summer we will be completing a similar but much larger project with the re-landscaping of the Sheffield entrance and continuing around the entire assisted living sides of our building. When completed we will have to request that no feeders be placed around the building. The cost of keeping our grounds attractive for everyone is significant and with the new landscaping mulch and stone, we need to control the weeds and varmint issues we have experienced. Our goal is always to create a wonderful community, inside and out, for our residents at the lowest possible price. Your help with this change will assist with keeping our prices as low as possible and we hope you will enjoy the new refreshed look. Richard & Eunice List #203 Arthur & Doris Hagen #208 Welcome New Residents Molly Massoll #216 Alice Wirt #507 Administrative Note VAN, PLEASE Just a reminder - when you need the Sheffield van for a ride then we need at least 24 hours notice unless it is a medical emergency. Some days Jim & Rande spend most of a day running the roads with residents’ medical appointments and squeezing in that last minute request for a ride can be a “mission impossible”. Our van is available Monday through Friday for scheduled appointments from 8:00AM-2:30PM. We appreciate your understanding with our request. • OUR NEWSLETTER If you have enjoyed our newsletter and would like to share it with your family or friends, please let us know and we’ll add them to our mailing list. You can expect the next newsletter in October when we’ll be reminiscing about past summer fun and enjoying all the colors of autumn.
