Polio- Timeline 1580-1342 BCE- Egyptian stele depicts priest with a withered leg leaning on a staff.
Polio 1916- Polio epidemic in NYC, spread to 27 States. 27,000 paralyzed 9,000 dead After 1916, epidemic every summer.
Polio 1954- Dr. Jonas Salk Develops the first vaccine against polio, an injectable inactivated (killed) polio vaccine (IPV).
Polio 1961- Dr. Albert Sabin develops “live” oral vaccine (OPV).
Rotary and Polio 1979- First ever 3-H Grant. Project to buy and deliver vaccine to 6 million children in the Philippines.
Rotary and PolioPlus 1985- Rotary International launches PolioPlus.
Why is polio more difficult to eradicate than smallpox? Smallpox easy to identify Only 0.5% infected with polio have paralysis

Gates Foundation • Will match all Rotarian Raised Polio Donations $2 for each $1 contributed, up to $35 million/year. • In first of three year commitment. • Our Goal is Global Polio Eradication!
INDIA • In 2009, half the world’s cases were in India • Today there are none! • On January 13, 2014, India celebrated Three Years without a case
Endemic Countries • Nigeria- 60% drop in cases compared to 2012. Substantially improved immunity. 53 cases in 2013. 5 in 2014. • Afghanistan- 70% decline. 14 cases in 2013. 8 in 2014. • Pakistan- our biggest challenge. 99 cases in 2014. North Waziristan-800,000 vaccinated.
Polio Eradication & Endgame Strategic Plan 2013-2018 • Stop all WPV transmission by end of 2014 and new cVDPV outbreaks within 120 days. • Help strengthen immunization systems. • Certify all regions of the world are polio-free and ensure that all polio-virus stocks are safely contained. • Ensure that a polio-free world is permanent and provides public health benefits for years to come.
