Warm up • True/False • Give chest compressions at the rate of 80 per minute for an adult victim. • Feel for a pulse for at least 5 seconds but no more than 10 seconds before starting chest compressions. • All shock victims must be positioned flat on the back with the feet raised 12 inches. • To treat a victim with frostbite, rub the area vigorously to stimulate circulation and warm the skin. • To treat a nosebleed, place the victim in a sitting position with the head tilted backward.
Ostomy care • Def: Ostomy- a surgical procedure in which an opening, called, a stoma, is created in the abdominal wall. • The procedure allows wastes such as urine, to be expelled through the opening.
Reasonings for ostomy care • Tumors and/or cancer in the urinary bladder or intestine. • Treatment for birth defects • Ulcerative colitis • Bowel obstruction • Injuries
Equipment and supplies needed • Washcloth • Towel • Soap • Basin • Bed protector or underpad • Bath blanket • Ostomy pouch or bag • Ostomy belt • Adhesive (if needed) • Skin barrier or wafer (as ordered) • Toilet tissue • Bedpan • Disposable gloves • Infectious-waste pan • Pen or pencil
procedure • Check physicians orders • Assemble equipment • Introduce yourself, identify the patient, explain procedure, close door for privacy • Lock wheels and elevate bed, cover patient with bath blanket • Place bed protector under patients hips on the side of the stoma. • Feel basin with water (105-110°F) • Put on disposable gloves
procedure • Open belt and remove ostomy bag • Note the color, amount, and type of drainage in bag • Use toiet tissue to wipe around the stoma • Examine stoma and surrounding skin, tell supervisor if you find anything unusual • Wash the ostomy area gently with soap and water and dry gently • Use measuring chart to determine correct size of stoma and correct size barrier or wafer.
procedure • Position belt around patient • Gently press a clean ostomy bag in place over the wafer and seal bag tightly • Remove underpad • Replace underpad • Replace the top bed linen and remove the bath blanket • Observe all checkpoints before leaving
