  1. SCSC 314 Life and the Physical Environment

  2. Instructor Jim Heilman 237A Heep Center 845-7169 j-heilman@tamu.edu Aletsch glacier – the longest glacier in the alps

  3. Life on earth has changed dramatically over millions of years in response to changes in the physical environment - atmosphere, soil, water

  4. Major changes to the environment are occurring, some of which are the result of ‘mother nature’, and some the result of human activity. These changes may have a profound effect on the ability of earth to sustain life as we know it.

  5. An understanding of the interaction between physical and biological systems is necessary to manage our natural resources wisely, and to minimize adverse effects on the environment.

  6. In this exploratory course, we will describe physical environments in which living organisms reside, and discuss the mechanisms by which plants, animals and humans interact with and adapt to atmospheric, soil and aquatic environments.

  7. Classroom and outdoor demonstrations, and treks around the A&M campus will be used to illustrate major themes.
