Stairway Requirements Section R311.5 2003 IRC Stairway Width • Minimum36" at all points above the permitted handrail height and below the required headroom height Handrail Requirements: • Height: between 34″ to 38 ″ (measured vertically from the sloped plane adjoining the tread nosing, or finish surface or nosing of the tread to the top of the handrail) • Handrails required on at least 1 side of each continuous run of treads or flight with four or more risers • Minimum 1½ ″ between the handrail and the wall • Shall not project more than 4½ inches on either side of the stairway • Grip size: 1¼″ – 1½″ for handrails with a circular cross section. Non-circular shapes are allowed – see section R311.5.6.3 • Shall be continuous for the full length of the flight, from a point directly above the top riser of the flight to a point directly above the lowest riser of the flight. • Handrail ends shall be returned or shall terminate in newel posts or safety terminals Rise/Run Requirements: • Rise: maximum 7 ¾″ (the tallest riser and the shortest riser may not vary by more than 3/8”) • Run: minimum 10″ (the longest run and the shortest run may not vary by more than 3/8”). Headroom: • Not less than 6′ 8 ″ measured vertically from the sloped plane adjoining the tread nosing or from the floor surface of the landing or platform. Guard Requirements: • On porches, balconies or raised floor surfaces more than 30″ above the floor grade below. Intermediate rails or ornamental closures shall not allow the passage of a sphere 4 inches or more in diameter. • On open sides of stairs with a total rise or more than 30 inches above the floor or grade below. Required guards shall not allow a sphere 4¾" to pass through. ceiling Headroom: minimum 6' 8" Opening such that a 4″ sphere cannot pass through Not less than 36” in height handrail height at stairway 34" – 38 " Guards (as applicable) floor or landing Handrail Floor or landing for every 12´ of vertical rise Handrail shall be returned or terminate in newel posts or safety terminals rise Opening such that a 4 3/8” sphere cannot pass through run stair width floor or landing required at the top & bottom of each stairway
