Teaching Delivery • 4 x 7-week blocks • 2 x HLB and 2 x NME • Pairs of firms are selected to be complementary (eg urology with hepatology) • Most firms at MRI • 2 x HLB forms at NMGH
Firms should include…. • An introduction by the firm lead on day 1 • A timetable • 3 formal teaching sessions per week • 2 PBL sessions (often together) • Feedback
Feedback to students Informal/formal • Informal – you may not be aware it is happening • Formal – official form completed in last week of firm • Also – please ask firm leads how you are getting on mid firm
Teaching sessions • 3 per week • Bedside teaching or in seminar room • Consultant led • Consultant should do at least 50% - some may delegate some to junior doctor • Please contact Robert Leonard if tutor is more than 5 minutes late
PBL sessions • Same rules as teaching sessions
Registers Each group is given two registers:- Clinical teaching register PBL register One group member nominated for register responsibility. Both registers MUST be returned by Monday lunchtime to Robert Collect new registers from Undergraduate Office.
If tutor’s name is not on the register, please write tutor’s name CLEARLY in the left column under lead’s name. • Please sign, date and score each session. If a student has not signed a register, it is automatically assumed that the student was absent from the session as it is the students individual responsibility to make sure they sign the register. • Students must use their signatures and not initials. Put a line through the box of any student who is absent.
Very important…… SCORING TEACHING All students should score each teaching & PBL session 1 - 5 5 = Excellent 4 = Good 3 = Average 2 = Below Average 1 = Poor
The information recorded on the registers is important as it • enables us to monitor teaching and receive feedback. • highlights any problems early on
Cancelled/DNA Sessions • If the session is not delivered please tick the appropriate tutor’s name and indicate DNA or cancelled on the register. If the session was DNA or cancelled students who are present should sign the register to confirm their presence. • For every cancelled or DNA session you must inform the Undergraduate office.
Absences • If the student who looks after the group registers is absent the group still has to provide a register. It is advisable for another group member to also keep copies of blank registers. • All student absences are recorded. Students are required to inform the office about any future absences they expect to occur. • In the case of ill health students must inform the Undergraduate office. A self-certification form (for absence of up to 5 working days) must be completed on your return. This form is available on your encrypted USB stick. Longer absences require a doctor’s note.
