  2. Early races of North America • Dutch brought first Africans to America. • In 1619, 32 Africans lived in Jamestown • Early blacks were free, especially if baptized. Colonists called them “negroes” (Spanish for black) • Europeans enslaved Native Ams first, but when disease killed most, they enslaved Africans

  3. Native Americans • Many had organized societies and lived harmoniously with their environment • Some tribes provided refuge to escaping slaves and some saw extensive racial mixing • Natives taught other how to cultivate corn, pumpkins, tobacco, & potatoes • miscegenation – interracial contact that produced people of mixed race
