  1. Warm ups - simplify

  2. Math Binder • Current Notes • Old Notes • Homework • Review Sheets • Quizzes/Tests

  3. 3-3 Solving Multistep Equations Objective: To solve equations using add., subt., mult., and division.

  4. 5n + 6 = -4 -6 -6 5n = -10 5 5 n = -2 17 = 7y + 87 Examples 1 – 3 (watch & listen) -9 -9 (5) (5)

  5. Examples 4 – 6 (do with me)

  6. Example 7 – 9 (with a partner)

  7. TOO (Try on your own)

  8. Solve.

  9. Recap with a partner… • Explain to your partner how to solve a multi-step equation. • Explain how to solve the following equation:

  10. Homework Pg. 160 # 17 – 33 odd Check your answers in the back of the book.

  11. Math Lab • Review today’s lesson • Homework • Please finish worksheets from last week: • Why did the ant run across the cracker box? • What did the Spanish Farmer say to his chicken?

  12. ObjectiveThe student will be able to: solve two-step equations. Designed by Skip Tyler, Varina High School

  13. To solve two-step equations, undo the operations by working backwards. Example: Ask yourself, What is the first thing we are doing to x? What is the second thing? • Recall the order of operations as you answer these questions. • Dividing by 2 • Subtracting 3 To undo these steps, do the opposite operations in opposite order.

  14. 1) Solve 2x - 1 = -3 Draw “the river” Add 1 to both sides Simplify Divide both sides by 2 Simplify Check your answer + 1 + 1 2x = -2 2 2 x = -1 2(-1) - 1 = -3 -2 – 1 = -3

  15. 2) Solve Draw “the river” Add 4 to both sides Simplify Clear the fraction -Multiply both sides by 3 Simplify Check your answer + 4 + 4 3 · · 3 x = 36 12 – 4 = 8

  16. Try these on your own...
