The process of fertilization in Humans Prepared by D. Earle
What are gametes? • Gametes are sex cells. In humans male sex cells are called sperm and female sex cells are called the egg. The sperm (male sex cell) contains a half of the genetic material that made the father. The egg (female sex cell) contains a half of the genetic material that made the mother. In fertilization the male sex cell combines with the female sex cell to produces a totally new individual.
Human Fertilization Explained • Sperm is released in the vagina. • The sperm travel pass the cervix • Up the uterus • Into the fallopian tube where the egg/ovum is found. • The sperm then penetrates the outer wall of the ovum and its nucleus combines with the female nucleus found in the egg.

After fertilization • The cell will continue to divide until it develops human features and will result in a new human being (a young baby)
