3 World Population Trends 1) The world population is continuously growing larger. 2) There is a growing gap between less developed countries (LDCs) and more developed countries (MDCs): - In 1900: MDCs had 560 million people (34% of the world’s total population) LDCs had 1.1 billion people (66% of the world’s total population) - In 1990: MDCs had 1.2 billion people (23% of the world’s total population) LDCs had 4.1 billion people (77% of the world’s total population) - In 2050: it’s estimated that over 84% of the world’s people will live in less developed countries. 3) Urbanization: the growing movement of people from rural to urban areas. - 1800: 5% of the world lived in urban areas - 1998: 50% of the world lived in urban areas - 2011: over 50% of the world lives in urban areas

Arithmetic & Physiologic Population Density Arithmetic Population Density: This is technically the correct calculation though it may give an inaccurate impression. Ex. Population of Canada = 33 891 000 people = approx. 3.68 people/km2 Canada’s Land Area 9 220 970 km2 Physiologic Population Density: This shows a more accurate and meaningful density figure. It represents the number of people in a country relative to the area of cultivated land. Ex. Population of Canada = 33 891 000 people = approx.74.5 people/km2 Canada’s Cultivated Area 455 000 km2
