What is an Essay? • A piece of writing that tries to prove a point by supporting it with evidence • Persuade the reader to believe and support your opinion
How do you Write an Essay? • Introduction with Thesis statement and 3 pieces of evidence • 3 body paragraphs • Conclusion

Introduction • Introduces the novel, author and topic • Presents the thesis statement and 3 pieces of evidence
Thesis Statements • An unproven statement that tells the reader what you intend to talk about • Can be argued as being true or untrue • Present 3 pieces of evidence
Examples Bad Thesis: Parvana is travelling in search of her mother. Good Thesis: Parvana’s search for her mother is important because of the positive influence she makes in the lives of Hassan, Asif and Leila.
How to Prove a Thesis • Each body paragraph talks about 1 piece of evidence • Example & quote from the book • Explanation of the quote • Relation to the thesis
How to Write a Thesis • Start with a topic • Choose a specific issue about that topic • Write a statement that can be proven true or false • Use 3 points that will help you prove your statement • Combine the statement and the points
