  1. Der Treueschwur der USA. The Pledge of Allegiance, written by Baptist minister and socialist Francis Bellamy, first appeared in The Youth's Companion magazine in 1892 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America. The original oath used the phrase “my flag” rather than “the flag of the United States of America,” a change made in 1923.
