Absolutely unacceptable…. At this point in the year, you have got to be kidding me if you are still making these mistakes!
No…. • Personal pronouns (I, you, we, me, our) • Contractions (didn’t, couldn’t, that’s)
Must use… • Capital letters at beginning of sentences and for all proper nouns. • (that includes titles, character names, places, etc…)
Other grammar errors • Many sentence fragments and run-ons • Numbers must be written out if they are less than 100 (forty-six / not 46) • Commas after introductory elements ie. When Twain was twelve, ______.
Documentation errors • After the short story plot summary (which is only to be 2 paragraphs MAXIMUM!!) Remember: who, what, when, where, why and how… • After every direct quotation • Usually after every paragraph • Period belongs outside of the parentheses (Ganley 4).
Paper format • Complete MLA heading on first page Suzie Smart English 10 period 1 Ms. Ganley and Mrs. Stout 6 May 2011 Double spaced
Paper format • Headers on the top of all pages – ½ inch from the margin • Number pages continuously Smart 1
Paper title • Your title must be centered on the first page and reflect the paper topic. • It CANNOT be the same title as the short story. • ie: Chopin’s personal struggles as seen in her story “Regret”.
Works Cited page Smart 5 Works Cited Alpha by author No numbers or bullets Three sources needed
Remember • The introduction MUST contain a thesis. • The connection section can be up to one full page – maybe even a little longer. If you can’t find connections – you must identify and discuss modern references! • STATE, SHOW AND EXPLAIN your literary devices! • Your conclusion should refer to the thesis again!
