What is a lake? • A lake is a large body of water surrounded on all sides by land. • They can be so large that the biggest are called seas. • Lakes are inland ands not part of the ocean • Majority of lakes are freshwater
Unique Characteristics • They are the same as a pond but, lakes are much larger. • Changes in the level of the lake are effected by the input and output of the lake water sources. • The material at the bottom of the lake are composed of various substances. • Lakes can be categorized on the basis of their richness substances.
How Are They are Formed? • Rain water can collect in big hollows in the ground. The hollows are made when earths plates move or when moving glaciers, when they erode the area in their path. • They are also formed when landslides leave huge depressions in the ground.
Where Can It Be Found? • The majority of Lakes are fresh water and can be found in higher latitudes in the northern hemisphere. • More than 60% of lakes can be found in Canada
