3. simple subject- main word or group of words that tells whom or what the sentence is about
simple predicate (or verb)- main word or group of words that tells something about the subject

4. A sentence consists of 2 parts: the complete subject and the complete predicate. The complete subject includes the noun/pronoun that is the subject and all the words that go with it. The complete predicate is the word/words that make up the verb and all the words that go with it.

5. compound subject- two or more subjects joined by a conjuction (usually and or or) that have the same verb

6. complement- word or group of words that completes the meaning of a verb
subject complement- completes a linking verb and identifies/modifies the subject
Complement Type 1:
Subject complements may be predicate nominatives or predicate adjectives.
predicate nominative- noun or pronoun that follows a linking verb and renames/identifies the subject
predicate adjective- adjective that follows a linking verb and modifies the subject
7. Predicate Nominatives:
“The Most Dangerous Game” is an exciting story.
The main characters are Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore.
Predicate Adjectives:
Miss Postelli is happy.
The corn was sweet and buttery.
8. Complement Type 2:
direct object- noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb or that shows the result of the action (verb here must be an action verb)
The sniper killed his brother.
Although his watch was his most prized possession, Jim sold it.
Shakespeare wrote not only great plays but also beautiful sonnets.
9. Complement Type 3:
indirect object- noun or pronoun that precedes the direct object and that usually tells to whom, for whom, to what or for what the action of the verb is done
Sheila read the children a story by H.A. Rey.
Frank gave the Red Cross a donation.
She made her neighbors and friends fruitcakes for Christmas.
10. Sentence Classification:
declarative- makes a statement
imperative- makes a request or gives a command
interrogative- asks a question
exclamatory- expresses strong feeling
