Subject Matter Expert Resource ProjectAnita MillsAssociate DirectorSponsored Programs Compliance Traininganitamil@pobox.upenn.edu(215) 898-1936 CHALLENGES • Changes in Penn Leadership • Changes in supervisor – TWICE • No centralized training resources on the University side of the Penn system • Little interest in improving the training development process • Little value placed on training on the University side of the Penn system • Focus group members located remotely PERSONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS • Increased confidence in my leadership ability • Better understanding of different communication styles • Better understanding of my strengths and weaknesses • Stronger voice to vocalize my thoughts and ideas in less than safe environments VISION Enhance the quality of training at Penn by improving communication between Subject Matter Experts and Instructional Designers. Gain an understanding of the needs of Subject Matter Experts when they develop training.Collaborate with KLINK developers to create resources that would educate and support Subject Matter Experts. Establish a website that would house resource material for Subject Matter Experts. The resource material should be organized in a way that speaks to the lessons learned from the chat sessions. BACKGROUND Training resources are not readily available or shared at my institution and developing training is challenging and undervalued. There are multiple opportunities at Penn to make the training development process more efficient by sharing resources and improving communication between Subject Matter Experts and Instructional Designers. • Subject Matter Expert Resource website • Knowledge Link Developer Group • Support for Subject Matter Experts • Student workers for project • Internal listserv • Institutional buy-in and support for training • Social network for remote collaboration LEADERSHIP PROJECT • Refined project vision as I worked through LDI exercises • Recruited four Subject Matter Experts and three Instructional Designers to participate in a Focus Group • Conducted two structured chat sessions to discuss the challenges of training and the needs and constraints of Subject Matter Experts • Posted transcript and notes from chat session on website for the KLINK developers and Subject Matter Experts community to review • Reassessed original project vision based on what I learned for the chat sessions • Separated training module into multiple resources for easy review • Developed and maintain a website to share resource material LEADERSHIP LESSONS • The power of knowing how much you don’t know • The power of finding a vision • The power in being positive Even when it hurts! • The power of being aware of different communication styles • The power of listening • The power of trust • The power of being contagious • The power of dusting yourself off and trying again RESOURCES • Yahoo Messenger – Chat tool • Articulate Software – Rapid e-learning tool • Scriblink.com – Whiteboard tool • NCURA Z Pattern – Communication tool • Leadership Challenge Workbook – Project planning tool SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT FOCUS GROUP • Mary Lee Brown • University of Pennsylvania • Jan Madole • Oklahoma State University • Jodi Moore • Temple University • Linda Yoder • University of Pennsylvania INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGNERFOCUS GROUP • Scott Baker • University of Pennsylvania – Health System • Ryan Frasch • University of Pennsylvania – School of Medicine • Michelle Ziegmann • University of Pennsylvania – School of Medicine ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I am thankful for NCURA and the LDI program.
