Power supply Load profile Increased penetration of RES store power when in excess for later use Increased value of energyhigher buy-back rates for predictable energy sources INVESTIRE Investigation on Storage Technologies for Intermittent Renewable Energies
Environment State of the art Existing data Economics R & D needs Technical criteria INVESTIRE Description of the project • Thematic network (data gathering but no R&D work) • 33 Partners • 0.8 M€ • 30 month duration (finished in October 2003) • 9 technologies addressed Lead-acid batteries Lithium batteries Double layer capacitors Nickel based batteries Electrolyser, H2 storage, fuel cell Flywheels Redox-flow batteries Compressed air Metal/air batteries
INVESTIRE Objectives • To propose technology neutral evaluation criteria that are suited for the renewables applications • Technical ( lifetime, energy efficiency, self discharge …) • Economical (investment cost, operating cost, cost of delivered kWh …) • Environmental (use of scarce resources, recycling …) • To determine the needs in R&D • Based on the various applications • For each storage technology • For the storage systems (possible hybridation …)
INVESTIRE Technical criteria • Requirements on the storage function based on questionnaires about existing and future applications (mostly stand-alone) • Clustering is technology neutral
INVESTIRE Self discharge • Large dispersion of the self discharge values • Technologies decoupling power and energy are suited for long term storage
INVESTIRE Energy efficiency • Large dispersion of the energy efficiency values • Low efficiency technologies suited only for seasonal storage in stand-alone applications
INVESTIRE Economics • Investment cost of the only installed technology (no periphery)
INVESTIRE Further work and Conclusions • Further work: • Finalisation of publishable technology reports • Transversal analysis and further data gathering • Definition of an R&D roadmap • Finalisation of a mapping of centres of excellence • Information on www.investire-network.com • Conclusions: • INVESTIRE allows the gathering of manufacturers, research structures and professional associations • Lack of validated data for emerging technologies
