Dualism The problem of other minds
Gilbert Ryle One person could in principle never recognize the difference between the rational and the irrational utterances issuing from other human bodies, since he could never get access to the postulated immaterial causes of some of their utterances. Save for the doubtful exception of himself, he could never tell the difference between a man and a Robot… According to the theory, external observers could never know how the overt behavior of others is correlated with their mental powers and processes and so they could never know or even plausibly conjecture whether their applications of mental-conduct concepts to these other people were correct or incorrect.
The Problem of Other Minds If Substance Dualism is correct, it’s possible for all of the human bodies around you to lack minds and yet behave just as they do. If it’s possible for all of the human bodies around you to lack minds and yet behave just as they do, then you have no evidence of other minds. You do have evidence of other minds. [So] Substance Dualism isn’t correct.
