  1. WIKI IN THE CLASSROOM • Examples from literature • Who is doing what with wiki’s? • Note: Very new area of study and consequently these result are preliminary.

  2. Is there a space for a teacher in wiki? Andreas Lund & Ole Smordal • Study undertaken in an Upper Secondary Norwegian School • English classes • Two projects undertaken • “Our USA” • Funkytown • Study used MediaWiki platform

  3. “Our USA” • The USA is one of the primary topics in the national curriculum. • MediaWiki was used to allow a collective construction of the students view of the USA • Main categories would include US history or US Government • Sub – categories would include… just about anything!

  4. Preliminary Conclusions • Creating extensions at the expense of rewriting • Collective ownership was not immediate • Students pursued individual threads – ‘budding’ • Teacher control • Needed to reestablish collective concept. • Did result in less budding and more revision • Students reluctant to interfere with ‘someone else’s material.’

  5. “Funkytown” • Mediawiki used to build a fictional British town • Greater sense of collective ownership • Greater teacher presence in the wiki environment • Flexible regulatory mechanism • Ran for a longer period of time • Term instead of 2 weeks

Preliminary conclusions • More collaborative but students still shied away from editing their peers • Difficult for a teacher to have an effective role online • Limitations of the MediaWiki software • Potential is great however there are refinements that must be made to the software in order to support the teachers online role.

Science Online • Wiki-based learning environment • Student authors construct articles on science topics • Utilised the MediaWiki platform with the addition of • ReferenceTools: elevates references to first class objects • TeacherTools: centralised location to manage assignments • Student view: management for students

Preliminary Findings • Teething problems • Students found it difficult to collaborate • Editing conflicts hindered progress • Awkwardness of using wiki initially however student were quite proficient at the end. • Teachers perspective • Marking the collaborative assignments was difficult • Privacy: concerns students might post something that might upset parents
