Creating a Living Newspaper • Select related primary source documents • Preferably 4 short documents • Have the students silently read each document and pull their favorite/ most important quote • Place the students in groups and have them discuss the problem or conflict within the documents
Creating a Living Newspaper • The students will then bring the documents to life by… • Creating the characters • Play setting • Acting out the conflict and resolution
Dialectical Journaling • Can be used as a stand alone or an introduction to a larger project • I.e. essay or other significant task • Students will pull out important quotes or passages from the text and then provide their response. • When using larger texts, page and line numbers will help if this is a precursor to an essay
Fact or Fiction? Using historical fiction in the classroom. • Have the students break the book into manageable sections • I.e. immigration, working conditions • Students will pull out information from the text that references each theme • Page numbers should be included • Students will then provide research that supports or refutes the information in the text. • Students will then report their findings in an essay or other method.
