  2. July 12,1789 • On July 12, 1789 Camille Desmoulins leapt up onto a public table an announced the Jacques Necker had been dismissed from the Kingdom. • He eventually inspired people to storm the Bastille.

  3. Storming Of The Bastille • July 12th, 1789 – After Necker’s Dismissal by King Louis XVI, who had been sympathetic to the third estate, Camille took his opportunity. • Fear struck the National Assembly after royal troops were brought in to Versailles from Frontier Garrison’s. • Crowds gathered throughout Paris, including more than ten thousand at the Palais Royal,. Camille Desmoulins, a known freemason from the lodge of the Nine Sisters, according to Mignet, successfully rallied the crowd by "mounting a table, pistol in hand, exclaiming: 'Citizens, there is no time to lose; the dismissal of Necker is the knell of a Saint Bartholomew for patriots! This very night all the Swiss and German battalions will leave the Champ de Mars to massacre us all; one resource is left; to take arms!'"

  4. Storming Of The Bastille • After invading the Bastille and releasing all hostages the demonstrators invaded the Hotel Des Invalides to gather arms. (29,000 to 32,000 muskets)

Freedom Of The Press • Camille Desmoulins strongly believed in freedom of the press. • He became a journalist in 1789 and started publishing Histoire des Révolutions de France et de Brabant which was popular from its first to its last issue. • He claims he was influenced by the theorists of the revolution.

  6. Falling Out With Robespierre • Robespierre was like a father figure to Camille and defended him and spoke for him. • Once Camille Desmoulins became friends with Danton, him and Robespierre broke ties because Danton didn’t like Robespierre.

  7. Desmoulins and Danton • Desmoulins and Danton were great friends from the time they met for the rest of their lives. • Danton began to lead Desmoulins in a way. • In July 1791 Camille appeared before the municipality of Paris as head of a deputation of petitioners for the deposition of the king. • Soon after, Desmoulins and Danton had warrants out for their arrests.

  8. Desmoulins lived in extreme poverty early in his life. • He adopted green as his color for rallying liberty. • Desmoulins took part in the August 10th attack on the Tuileries Palace. • He was secretary to Danton in the latter’s role as the new justice minister.

  9. Facts about Desmoulins • He was nicknamed Gamim of Genius • Robespierre compared his friend Camille to a spoiled child. • On his last day in 1789 his last words were “From one end of the country to the other, a universal cry is heard, everyone wants to be free.”

  10. Camille Desmoulins interoperated Necker’s dismissal as evidence that the king would use the troops stationed in Paris to dispel the estates general and suppress any demonstrations. • In his early days Camille was known as the Lantern Lawyer because of his advocacy of hanging aristocrats from light poles.
