CFRS XL CLUB started in September 2012 within a PRU based at a local Crewe high school. • Neither the PRU or CFRS has any previous experience of delivering XL CLUB. • Only a small cohort selected by the PRU with an inappropriate team mix including some very challenging behaviour. • Team collapsed and the XL CLUB ceased to exist by March 2013 and consequently the team was not registered. • CFRS delivery staff did have the opportunity to meet the young people prior to the start of the programme. • CFRS did not receive any funding from the PRU to help pump prime projects or to cover some of our operational costs. • No official partnership agreement was in place. • From day one, students failed to arrive on time for the programme and on occasion staff outnumbered young people. On a positive note, some important lessons were learned and some developmental positives were achieved by some of the young people on the programme.
An instable senior management team within the school has hindered a smooth planning phase due to a key member of staff being due to leave their post in the next academic year. • Initial meeting held in February 2013. However, the Partnership Agreement has yet to be signed. • A request has been to the school for a £3,000 financial contribution to cover registration fees with the Prince’s Trust and to provide a pot from which community projects can be pump primed. • There is a positive working relationship in previous years due to Middlewich High having commissioned CFRS to deliver Bespoke RESPECT Programmes for them. • However, since March 2013 the quality and frequency of communication between both parties has decreased. • Key project elements have yet to be bottomed out. Examples of which being: lack of team base; school minibus; lack of funding; Teaching Assistant yet to be allocated; Partnership Agreement. However, on a positive note the school have designated a cohort of 13 young people who are currently in year 9.
Queens Park High School • School has a long standing connection and positive working relationship with our designated Targeted Youth Support Team Leader. • The school has some previous experience of XL CLUB having run one team by itself. School is keen to work with us in order to utilise our skill set to progress and move the project forward. • The importance of a well balanced team mix is appreciated by the school. • The school have agreed to make a financial contribution of £3,000. • First meeting only took place in May 2013 so a Partnership Agreement is not in place yet. • Key project elements are in place such as an allocated team base; teaching assistant; cohort. • Meetings with parents and young people are due to take place during the summer 2013 term which will improve the success of the programme due to all parties being fully aware of the commitment involved and what the project entails. • Buy in from a stable school senior management team. • Excellent circle of communication between both parties. • All staff have received training from the Prince’s Trust. All ingredients are in place for a successful CFRS XL CLUB Programme with Queen’s Park High School.
CFRS XL CLUB to operate one session per week over Years 10 and 11: Year 10 Autumn Term Personal, Interpersonal and Team Skills:RESPECT Teambuilding Course Year 10 Spring Term Active Citizenship: Planning and fundraising phase for community project to include ROSPA Health & Safety Training Certificate; Emergency First Aid Certificate. Year 10 Summer Term Active Citizenship: Delivery of community project (gardening/painting project) to include project opening ceremony. Year 11 Autumn Term Preparation for Work: Next Steps phase: Mock interviews; CVs; Application Forms; Assertiveness Training; Covering Letters; Career Planning; Site events; CFRS Human Resources and Learning & Development departments to provide an input into this key element. <half term>
Entrepreneurship and Enterprise: Planning for Enterprise Project (e.g. to run a restaurant on a Canal Barge); Basic Food Hygiene Training; Menu planning; Pricing structure to turn out a profit after taking into consideration costs of raw materials; Advertising and marketing e.g. 2for1 deals; Training re customer service skills. Year 11 Spring Term Entrepreneurship and Enterprise: Deliver of Enterprise Project <half term> Preparation for Work: Work Placements Year 11 Summer Term Enrichment Projects: Enrichments e.g. Fire Cadets. < half term> EXAMS
Fully utilise support on offer from local Programme Executive. • Conduct research trips to gain best practice from other XL CLUB providers. • Attend Prince’s Trust Internal Verification Meetings to gain insight into the appropriate standard for logbook portfolio submissions. • Participate in meetings with parents and young people during the summer term prior to commencing delivery in the autumn term. • Ensure key ingredients are in place prior to delivery: buy in from school’s SMT; team base; funding; staff training; scheme of work. • Sign up to Partnership Agreement prior to commencing delivery.
