DSM2, Version 7 CWEMF February 26, 2007 Eli Ateljevich, PhD Department of Water Resources Delta Modeling Section
Talk Outline • Information management • Input changes and GUI • New model features • Status
Consistency Version control Scenario management Extensibility and reuse of common items Transparency NOT an archive of runs Database Information Management Goals
Layer Based Input 7 (added) 2 (revised) Grid layer 2 5 6 3 2 4 1 Grid layer 1
IO System and GUI • Graphical user interface (GUI) front end for database • Timed IO stored in DSS, assigned in GUI • Some run-specific items can be input in text • PTM is text based • HDF5 is used for the “tidefile”
New Model Features • Gates with multiple, more physical structures • User-written operating rules • More reliable solvers • Readable tidefile using HDF5 • CONDOR-friendly for batch simulations • Old/inconsistent features deprecated
Physical Gate Positions elev Variable weir crest Radial/sluice height elev
Upper Stage Trigger Stage (ft) Open Gate Lower Stage Trigger Close Gate Time Example – Operate a Gate Based on Water Levels
HDF5 Tidefile • Robust – designed for NASA satellite data • Tools – both DWR and open source • More useful data and better structure coming soon: • QUAL • Stage (as opposed to flow area)
Numerical Reliability: DB vs Text • Better closure in HYDRO • Maxiter nearly eliminated • Closure based on solution, not slowdown • Continuity ensured • Small fixes in QUAL nonconservative, conservative same • PTM velocities time-centered
Do They Give The Same Answer? • Solutions in identical cases same • Some production items have been “translated”: • Geometry: DB has one kind of cross-section • Gates: make use of the new features • Testing includes isolated calculations (e.g. gate equations) and production runs • Time centering in PTM big improvement for some situations
Project Status • Production DSM2 runs from desktop (Access) and Informix database in progress • Delta Modeling Section conversion mandated within a month • 2-day training course and tutorials completed by all • External use within 6 months
