  3. “Honest Abe” • 16th President 1861-1865 (Republican) • Against secession • Civil War • Emancipation Proclamation • Gettysburg Address • Re-elected in 1864 • Died April 14, 1865

  4. Civil War • War between the Confederate States and the Union States. Started because of Southern secession from the Northern States. • April 1861- May 1865 ( Confederates surrendered) • 3 million fought; over 600,000 died

  5. Emancipation Proclamation • Delivered January 1, 1863 by Lincoln. • “Declared forever free those slaves within the Confederacy.” • Brought on the 13th 14th and 15th amendments

  6. Gettysburg Address • Nov. 19, 1863 • Delivered by Lincoln at Gettysburg Cemetery • Stated that all men were equal

  7. Assassination • Friday, April 14, 1865 Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theatre in Washington
