Supporting the Shifts through Aligned CurriculumNovember2012 6-12 Common Core Ambassadors
Expeditionary Learning • Expeditionary Learning (EL) is a non-profit organization that partners with schools, districts, and states to continuously improve education for all students. • In conjunction with Student Achievement Partners, EL designed and is delivering the 3-5 ELA modules.
Odell Education • Odell Education is an advisory firm around English language arts and literacy in US public education. • OE partners with schools, states and organizations to meet the current need for specialized expertise in K-12 college-and-career-ready education. • OE has currently focused its efforts on the successful nationwide implementation of the CCSS. • OE is developing four series of 6-12 model units (shorter than modules) for New York to help teachers interpret the CCSS at the instructional level. Making Evidence-Based Claims is one of these series.
Expeditionary Learning is collaborating with Odell Education to bring you the 6-8 ELA Modules. PCG will be bringing you the 9-12 modules moving ahead. Working together to create a consistent path 3-12. Next Steps 5

Greeting • "We have work to do. You can't just sit in a seat and grow smart ... I promise, you are going to do, and you are going to produce. And I am not going to let you fail.“ – Marva Collins, leader and activist. • At your tables: • Introduce yourselves. • Share a time when your effort – your production – led to an accomplishment you are especially proud of.
Our Work Together these Two Days • A deep focus on the close reading of complex texts and using evidence from text to support claims. • Why complex text? Close reading? Evidence-based claims? • How does this look in the classroom? • What are the instructional moves I need to be making, or helping my colleagues make, in order to ensure college and career readiness for all students? • We will learn together about the importance of complex text, close reading, and evidence-based claims. • We will examine how students learn to do these things using lessons that you will eventually see embedded in the modules. • We will discuss the importance of a “growth mindset.”
Constructing Meaning Together Norms of Collaboration
Learning Targets • Guiding Question: • How can close reading of complex text and developing students’ capacity to make evidence-based claims close the achievement gap and support all students to meet the demands of the Common Core Standards? • Learning Targets: • I can describe the relationship between complex text, close reading practices, and students’ preparation for college and careers. • I can analyze lessons focused on close reading and evidence based claims in preparation for application in my classroom (or to support others in applying in their classrooms). • I can continuously analyze and enhance my own growth mindset, as well as those of my students and colleagues.
