Jethro Creighton: protagonist; youngest of 12; harbored a deserter; ages 9-13; continuing ed. w/ Shad and Jenny out East • Jenny Creighton: ages 14-18; pretty; runs Creighton household; marries Shad in Wash., DC • Matt Creighton: Father of 12; pioneer from Kentucky; director of schools; has some education; suffers heart attack • Ellen Creighton: Mother of 12; lost 7 children; Matt’s wife; Jethro=favorite child • John Creighton: Oldest son living near home; married to Nancy; has 2 sons who become close to Jethro; Bill = closest brother; fights for Union; finds Bill in POW camp

Nancy Creighton: John’s wife; changes personality throughout novel; explains to Jethro why some letters are personal • Tom Creighton: age 18; wants to go to war; best friend = cousin Eb Carron; realizes war isn’t that great; dies at Pittsburg Landing • Mary Creighton: Older than Jenny, younger than John; killed in an accident that Travis Burdow caused • Bill Creighton: Jethro’s favorite brother; values education; best friend = John; fights for South because sees himself as Southern farmer; POW; was not at Pittsburg Landing battle! • Eb Carron: 18; Matt’s nephew; lived w/ Creightons since childhood; best friend = Tom; deserter who returns when given a chance

Shadrach Yale: 20; schoolmaster; seems like a part of Creighton family; fights for Union; gravely wounded at Gettysburg;marries Jenny • Wilse Graham: Ellen’s nephew from Kentucky; sympathizes w/ the South and fights for the South • Ed Turner: Creightons’ next-door neighbor; helps family whenever he can; worries about son’s being part of Sherman’s March to Sea • Ross Milton: Newspaper editor; gives Jethro a grammar book he wrote; writes editorial to vandals; escorts Jenny to Washington to see Shad • Dave Burdow: Travis’s father; saves Jethro’s life when Guy Wortman tries to kill him; reputation improves

Guy Wortman: Part of a gang of ruffians who kick up mob violence; tries to kill Jethro on his way home from Newton; burns Creighton farm and defiles stock well; gets shot in rear end by Sam Gardiner, store owner
