Asteroids, Meteors, and Comets. Asteroids. Any small planetary object that revolves around the sun. They are also known as “minor planets” or “planetoids”. Asteroids are made up of rock, that are large, but not large enough to be planets. One theory is that they are remains of old planets.

  2. Asteroids • Any small planetary object that revolves around the sun. • They are also known as “minor planets” or “planetoids”. • Asteroids are made up of rock, that are large, but not large enough to be planets. • One theory is that they are remains of old planets.

  3. Meteors • A small body of matter from outer space that comes into Earth’s atmosphere. • Made up of metal and small pieces of rock that melt when they enter Earth’s atmosphere • It appears as a streak of light. • Some people think of meteors as a “shooting star”.

  4. Comets • A cluster of ice and dust particles- when it is close enough to the sun, the ice begins to melt leaving a tail trailing behind it. • Sometimes referred to as a “dirty snowball”. • The naked eye can see a comet for days once it enters our solar system. • There is a theory that comets may be remains of old distant planets.
