Speech-Language LetterThinking, Speaking and Listening with Mrs. JacksonDecember 2013 • Happy Holidays! • In speech therapy this month we are discussing “shades of meaning”. Shades of meaning is a phrase used to describe the small, subtle differences in meaning between similar words or phrases. • For example: glance and stare both refer to looking at something but carry a different emphasis. Speech-Language Tip Of The Month • While reading with your child, talk about the different meanings of words you read. See if you can find other words that have the same meaning . Such as “Jog” and “Run” • This quick interaction will encourage your child to use language, speech sounds and increase communication skills. Great Books to READ in December: • *Winter Eyes poems and paintings by Douglas Florian • *The Three Snow Bears by Jan Brett • *The Gingerbread Girl by Lisa Campbell Ernst • *Boxcar Children: Mystery on Blilzzard Mountain by • Gertrude Chandler Warner • *The Shortest Day: Celebrating the Winter Solstice by • Wendy Pfeffer This Month We Are…. • Shades of Meaning • Using adjectives • Compare and Contrast important vocabulary words and their meanings As always, if you have concerns with your child’s speech and language skills please contact me or your teacher and we can take the first steps in supporting you and your family.
