This presentation must be viewed with the 2003 version of Microsoft PowerPoint or higher. • This presentation is beneficial for scorekeepers and libero trackers at any experience level: • New Scorekeepers – The majority of the slides follow parts of a “sample set” designed to cover the basics of scorekeeping. It is recommended that you use a blank scoresheet to follow along point by point. • Experienced Scorekeepers – The presentation covers new sections of the scoresheet and serves as a quick resource. The following “Contents” information will easily guide you to the slide that covers the particular area you’re interested in.

  4. 2011 Point of Emphasis: FIRST SET LINEUP SUBMISSION • Although first set lineups must be submitted before the three-minute mark in warm-ups, lineups should not be given to third parties (e.g., statisticians, announcers, media) until they are finalized at the one-minute mark. • Timeline: • 3:00 Lineups due; scorekeeper enters lineup on scoresheet • 1:00 Lineups finalized; lineups may be released to stats/media

  5. Scorekeeping Procedures Prior to the Match • Arrival Time – Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to match time, ready to work. Avoid being overly friendly with fans, players or coaches. • Attire – Wear a white polo shirt (preferably the white polo worn by the referees, with “Volleyball Certified Official” embroidered on one sleeve), navy slacks, white socks and white athletic shoes. • Tools – It is a good idea to bring extra pens (both blue or black and red.

  6. Scorekeeper – General Responsibilities • Prior to the match and each set, the scorekeeper: • Registers the data of the teams; • Reviews the lineup information submitted by each team for completeness and accuracy; and • Records the starting lineup of each team from the lineup sheet.

Scorekeeper – General Responsibilities • During the match, the scorekeeper: • Records the points scored and ensures the accuracy of the visible scoreboard; • Monitors each team’s serving order; • Records timeouts and player substitutions, and informs the second referee of the number used; • Communicates with the second referee regarding the final point of the set and when the eighth point in the deciding set is scored; • Records sanctions; • Records all other events as instructed by the second referee (for example, exceptional substitutions or prolonged interruptions).

  8. Scorekeeper – General Responsibilities • After the set, the scorekeeper: • Records the final set results; • Checks the scoresheet for accuracy; • Signs the scoresheet.

ScorekeepingTools • Scoresheets – At least four non-deciding set scoresheets and one deciding set scoresheet • Libero Tracking Sheets – One Libero Tracking Sheet should be sufficient for even a five-set match, but having an extra is a good idea. • Lineup Sheets – If the lineup sheets have space to enter all sets of the match, each team needs only one. Otherwise, a sufficient number of single-set lineup sheets for the entire match is required. • Pens – One blue (or black) pen, and one red pen

Lineup Submission for the First Set • For the first set, lineups must be submitted when at least three minutes remain on the clock timing the pre-match warm-up periods. • Lineups may be changed without penalty or substitution until there is one minute left on the clock. • For all other sets, lineups are due when 30 seconds remain on the clock timing the interval between sets.

  12. Completed Rally • A completed rally begins with a service and ends with a point being awarded. • Libero replacements as well as requests for timeouts, substitutions, and lineup checks may only occur after a completed rally, unless a forced rotation occurs from a penalty point.

  13. Wrong Server • If a wrong player serves, the scorekeeper will notify the second referee after contact. • The scorekeeper is not responsible for stopping play.

  17. First Team to Serve • Before the set begins, the Assistant Scorekeeper circles the S in the box near the name on the Libero Tracking Sheet of the team that will serve first. 22 SILVER BLUE 3 17 2 1 8 7 10 3 20 4 6 9 12

Current Server • In the Service column, the assistant scorekeeper marks a tally ( | ) when each player contacts the first service for each of her terms of service. • Regardless of the number times of a player serves before losing a rally, only one tally mark is entered for that term of service. • Using the tallies in the Service column, the Assistant Scorekeeper can quickly determine the three back-row players for either team. 22 SILVER BLUE 3 17 2 1 8 7 10 3 20 4 6 9 12

Libero Replacement Notation Change • Libero replacements are recorded by writing an L beside the number of the replaced player to indicate that the libero has entered the court in that player’s position. • When the non-libero player returns to the court, the re-entering player’s number is written beside the L. • Starting with the 2009 season, neither the L nor the non-libero player’s numbers are slashed to record the replacement. 22 SILVER BLUE 3 L 17 17 2 1 8 7 10 3 20 4 6 9 12

Team Substitutions • All regular substitutes are recorded on the Libero Tracking Sheet by slashing the number of the player leaving the court and writing the number of the entering substitute. • Each time a regular substitution is made, the next number (1 - 12) in the Team Substitutions counter on the Libero Tracking Sheet (LTS) is slashed as well. • The substitution count on the LTS should always equal the substitution count on the scoresheet. • The scorekeeper and assistant scorekeeper should confirm the team substitution count frequently during the match. • If asked, the assistant scorekeeper can provide backup information about the number of substitutions used by each team for the other match officials. 22 SILVER BLUE 3 L 17 17 2 1 8 7 10 3 20 4 11 4 6 9 12

  23. A sample set is about to begin. To practice scorekeeping, have a blank scoresheet and a black (or blue) pen and a red pen at hand. The sample set covers a wide variety of potential set situations. The objective is to learn the proper procedures for recording set events. Many of the events described in this sample set rarely occur, and will realistically not all happen in a typical set or match. The objective is to learn the proper procedure for recording the event and how to apply it to the specific play rather than to expect your future sets to present similar situations.

  25. Information Information It is Saturday, August 8, 2009 at the UNC Invitational Classic held at the Fetzer Arena in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. This is the first set of a Women’s Division 1 match (match #1). North Carolina State is playing Texas A&M. It is Saturday and the match is scheduled for 7:00 PM. The first referee is Keith Murlless and the second referee is Peggy Schaefer. Peter Cruz and Ray Wiley are line judges and you are the scorekeeper. We are going to work through a sample game to see how to use a scoresheet and Libero Tracking Sheet.

This is the first set of a Women’s Division 1 match (match #1). North Carolina State is playing Texas A&M. It is Saturday and the match is scheduled for 7:00 PM. The first referee is Keith Murlless and the second referee is Peggy Schaefer. Peter Cruz and Ray Wiley are line judges and you are the scorekeeper. NC State wins the coin toss and elects to serve first. NC State is the home team, and has chosen the bench on the left.   30. 8 / 8 / 2009 UNC INVITATIONAL CLASSIC 7 00 FETZER ARENA I 1 Emphasis Information A & M NC STATE 13 6 11 5 Although line-ups are initially due at the three-minute mark in timed warm-ups, the scorekeeper should not release the line-ups to third parties such as statisticians and announcers until line-ups are finalized at the one-minute mark. For the first set, teams may freely change their lineups until one minute remains on the clock timing the warm-up periods. With one minute remaining in the pre-match warm-ups, and after the lineup is submitted for sets two-five, no changes may be made to the lineup sheet after it is submitted to the scorekeeper, unless a substitution is used. The AS must notify the second referee immediately if an improper libero replacement occurs. As the set progresses, remember to place tally marks in the Service column as each player begins their term of service. Remember, if a player serves multiple times within the term of service, only one tally mark is entered for that term. After the next rally, the A&M libero, #13, replaces #9. This exchange is recorded in a similar fashion, except an “L” is used to indicate the libero’s entry. Remember, we no longer slash the numbers, or the “L”, for libero exchanges. State requests a substitution, #7 for #11. The AS records that action by slashing the “11” and writing a “7” immediately to the right of the of the slashed “11”. In addition to recording the libero exchanges, the AS must note the serving position of the libero to help ensure that the libero only serves in one position in each set. 1 2 9 When a libero contacts the ball to serve, a triangle is written around the corresponding Roman numeral in the Serving Order column, which indicates the only rotation where the libero can serve for the remainder of the set. Write an “L” next to #5 to indicate the replacement. The “5” is not slashed. Remember to place a tally mark in the service column when the libero contacts the ball for the serve. 8 6 3 4 5 8

In the scoring section, a triangle is used instead of a circle when the libero serves, and the results of the rally are recorded in the triangle. When the libero first contacts the ball for service, draw a triangle around the corresponding number in the “Serving Order” column to indicate that this is the only position where the libero can serve in this set. The NC State captain is angry due to the mind change and spikes the ball into the floor under the net. The first referee issues the captain an individual sanction (red card) for unsporting behavior. Since you marked a “Rotate” and the referee changed his mind, you slash the Rotate symbol, enter an M, and place the correct result (point 11) in a square. Point 11 is circled in the running score column. Since NC State point 5 was slashed incorrectly, it is crossed out and M is written next to it. When NC State later achieves point 5, the M will be slashed like any other loss of rally point. You start to record the loss of rally and point 5 for NC State, ... When a red card penalty is assessed, the opponents receive a penalty point. A penalty point is recorded in a square in both the scoring section and the running score.   47. Other Penalty Point procedures… • Serving team penalty • If the serving team receives a red card while the ball is out of play, a square is used instead of a circle in the scoring section. An “R” is recorded in the square. The resulting point for the opponent is recorded in the normal manner. • If the card is issued while the ball is already in play, an “R” is put inside the circle that was drawn at the service contact, and a square is placed around the circle. The scorekeeper should check that the correct player is serving prior to every serve, so most wrong servers will be detected prior to contact. In that case, no circle is drawn in the Scoring Section. The scorekeeper notifies the second referee about the wrong server as soon as the service contact, before anything is recorded.   49. Unusual Situations • Other Comments – The Comments Section is used anytime a noteworthy situation occurs and is pertinent to the progress of the set. Document the score, team involved, referee action, and uniform numbers if applicable. Comments are noted for: • Exceptional Substitutions • Expulsions • Disqualifications • Significant Corrections • Scorekeeper Errors – If the scorekeeper makes a mistake, the mistake is crossed out with an “X” and the correct symbol is written. • Forfeits – If a set is forfeited before its start, the scorekeeper prepares the scoresheet by filling in the heading, officials’ names, lineup of players and/or team present and a score of 25-0, then writes FORFEIT across the scoresheet. If more than one set of the match is forfeited, the same scoresheet is used for all sets with additional set numbers circled in the SET section. The scorekeeper then signs the scoresheet.
