Punctuation Marks • Upside-down punctuation marks such as (¿) and (¡) are placed at the beginning of a phrase to let you know if it is a question or an exclamation. ¿ signals a question ¡ signals an exclamation Examples: • ¿Hablasespañol? (Do you speak Spanish?) • ¡Hastamañana! (See you tomorrow!)
Accent Marks • Some words have written accent marks. • Accent marksare tilted lines placed over a vowel. • If the word requires an accent mark, it is part of spelling the word correctly. • Make sure you memorize where accent marks are when you learn new words. Examples: • Adiós (Goodbye) • Él (He)
Tildes • The wavy line in the letter “ñ” is called a tilde. • The tilde signals to pronounce the letter similarly to the “ny” sound in the word “canyon.”
