The Bible Reading for this morning is: Matthew 28:18-20
1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (NKJV) 23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me." 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes.
Main Theme for March and April of 2016! Moving Northside church of Christ Forward
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed
Evangelism is important because it has to do with the salvation of souls. • In Mathew 28:18-20 we find what many have called: the “great Commission”. However, many think that it should be called: the “great suggestion”. • Many consider the great commission to be something optional, and that is not the case.
Matthew 28:18-20 (NKJV) 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
We have a green light! • Who is to go?
To whom is Jesus talking to? (The disciples). • Are we also involvedin this commandment or not?
Many are saying that the great commission was only for the apostles, and that for that reason, we don't have to go out! • If that reasoning is correct, then many things that Jesus talked to the apostles about, do not apply to us.
Examples: • John 14:1-3… For sure heaven is not for us, because He was talking to the 12. • John 16… The Holy Spirit is not with us, because He was talking to the 12. • Mark 16:16… Baptism is not for us, because He was talking to the 12.
We need to be careful when trying to qualify certain things in the Bible. • Churches at the beginning didn’t consider the great commission to be something exclusive (only for the Apostles).
Church in Thessalonica: • 1 Thessalonians 1:8 • For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place. Your faith toward God has gone out, so that we do not need to say anything.
The church in Rome. • Romans 1:8 • First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.
The scattered church at the beginning. • Acts 8:4 • Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word.
Many understood the “Go Therefore” of Matthew 28:18 very well. • Sadly today, many do not understand it.
The aim of preaching is to convert others. • Heaven is for all, and the gospel is for all. We must tell others about the good news of Jesus.
We need to invite others like Phillip did to Nathanael. • John 1:45 • Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
To the disciples Jesus says in John 4: • John 4:35… • Do you not say, “There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!
He's a sinner, what are you doing???? • Matthew 9:12 • When Jesus heard that, He said to them, Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.
We MUST do the same! • Are you talking to sinners about the Gospel? • Are you?
Peter was doing the same in Acts chapter 2 • Acts 2:37… • 37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”
Paul advised the same to Timothy: • 1 Timothy 2:2 • And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
Remember something: • THE GOSPEL IS FOR ALL.
Don't be selective, don't pick and choose, and don’t make partiality. • Every person that breathes has the image of God in Him, and we all need to understand that!
The creation account states that men are created in the image of God. • Genesis 1:26-27… • 6 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
Jesus taught that the soul of man is beyond value. • Mark 8: 36-37 • 6 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? 37 Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
Every human being has an immortal soul. • All humans are made in the image of God, so it is awesome to be human. • We must love to preach to all, because their souls go on forever and ever and ever.
All nations doesn’t mean that we need to pack our luggage and move to China, then to India, then to Australia…
All nations in our day and age means your co-worker, your next door neighbor, your class mate, you’re teammate etc…
And, this person that you are preaching to, can be from any nation under heaven.
Acts 2:5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. • When Peter was preaching in Acts 2, he did not make partiality, but was giving the gospel to all.
Acts 10:34 34 Then Peter opened his mouth and said: “In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. • When Peter was preaching to Cornelius, he understood that! Cornelius was an Italian man!
Acts 8:27 27 So he arose and went. And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and had come to Jerusalem to worship, • Phillip also understood that, when he was teaching a man from Ethiopia, that is, from Africa
Romans 15:28 28 Therefore, when I have performed this and have sealed to them this fruit, I shall go by way of you to Spain. • Paul also understood the same, when he spoke regarding the Spanish people!
James 2:1 2 My brethren, do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with partiality. • James was very stern with the Christians in his days, and is warning each and every one regarding the sin of partiality when he said that!
James 2:9 9 but if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors. • Again, he mentioned the same thing in chapter 2, because it was a great problem. It is still is a GREAT PROBLEM IN THE CHURCH OF CHRIST!
James 3:17 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. • Real wisdom will never, ever, ever feel proud of big rallies, fights, and all of the noise that politicians are making, awakening racist sentiment among it’s followers…
These verses are important because we have a big problem today in the church of the Lord.
Many probably are not saying it in these words, but their actions speak louder! • White with white, black with black, Spanish with Spanish, Oriental with Oriental… • These people really believe that there will be different compartments for different colors in heaven !
We are going canvassing every month. • We will try to cover as much as we can in our community, and in other places. • A responsibility is set upon us and we must obey the commandments. • Being a Christian does not mean to just come and sit on the pew and go home. It is way more than that.
Remember what Daniel says in Daniel 12:3- • Those who are wise shall shine Like the brightness of the firmament, And those who turn many to righteousness Like the stars forever and ever. • Remember then: • Matthew 28:18-20 is the Great Commission not the Great Suggestion.
