More honey, more $$$... • Farmers brought European Honey-Bees to Japan to make more money! • The European Bees producemore honey than the native Japanese bee.
Euro vs. Japan! The European Honey-Bee has no native predators like the Japanese Giant Hornet, a very powerful predator…

Discussion Questions • How did the invasive European Honey-Bee defend itself against the Japanese Giant Hornet? • How did the native Japanese honey-bee defend against it’s natural predator? • How did NATURAL SELECTION give the Japanese bees an advantage over the European ones?
Answers / Discussion • How did the invasive European Honey-Bee defend itself against the Japanese Giant Hornet? • They had NO defense! They try to sting the hornet, but the hornet is too large and strong… • The hornets kill ALL the bees so they can access the honey and the larvae inside the hive.
2) How did the native Japanese honey-bee defend against it’s natural predator? • The Japanese Honey-Bees have lived with the Giant Hornets for thousands of years. They destroy the Japanese Hornet Scout by over-heating it. • The Hornet Scout leaves CHEMICALS (called pheromones) to callother hornets to attack. • The Japanese bees know this, and destroy the chemicals, too!
The Japanese bees form a “ball” around the hornet, and then HEAT themselves up! • They can survive hotter temperatures than the hornet, so the hornet dies. • They kill the scout before it can tell the other hornets… smart!
3) NATURAL SELECTION??! • There is no Japanese Giant Hornet in Europe… the European honey-bees are not “naturally selected” for survival against this type of predator… but the Japanese bees are!! • Sometimes an invasive species CANNOT survive in a new environment! Remember that before we start the project!
