  4. How to interpret the information from a Pedigree Females are indicated with a circle, and males are indicated with a square. = FEMALE = MALE

  5. How to interpret the information from a Pedigree A straight, horizontal line connecting a female and a male indicates that the two are married, and/or produced children.

  6. How to interpret the information from a Pedigree A slash across a shape indicates the person is deceased. (DEAD)

  7. How to interpret the information from a Pedigree A straight, vertical line connected to the vertical line above indicates the children produced by that union.

  8. How to interpret the information from a Pedigree If more than one child is birthed, then the children are placed in BIRTH ORDER along a vertical Line.

  9. How to interpret the information from a Pedigree Shapes may be shaded or clear. Shaded = Has trait/disease Unshaded = Does not Occasionally you may also see a partially shaded shape, or a shape with a dot. This indicates the person is a “Carrier” of the disease (is heterozygous for the trait, but the dominant allele overrides the recessive disease trait.
