Clothing 8 Sewing Equipment: Names and Function
Small Equipment is divided into 5 categories • Measuring tools • Cutting tools • Marking tools • Pressing tools • Pins and needles • At some point during the semester you will be using just about each one of these we are going over today
Measuring Tools • Tape measure: • Basic measuring tool • 60 inches long • Used for measuring larger things, body measurements, fabric
Measuring Tools • Seam gauge: • 6 inches long • Plastic or metal • Has a sliding marker • Measures small areas like hems and seams
Cutting Tools • Shears: • Cut fabric only!! • Bent handle allows the fabric to lay flat on table while cutting • Makes cutting easier
Cutting Tools • Scissors: • Smaller and shorter than shears • Round handles • Used for clipping seams, threads, paper • NOT USED TO CUT FABRIC!!!
Cutting Tools • Seam ripper: • Used to rip out unwanted seams • Its your ‘eraser’ to fix mistakes • Everyone at one point will have to seam rip!
Cutting Tools • Pinking shears: • Cut a zigzag edge • Helps prevent fabric from rolling up
Marking Tools • Tracing wheel and tracing paper: • Transfers marking from pattern to fabric • helps you put projects together by marking symbols that you will match up
Pressing Tools • Iron: • Used to smooth wrinkles and press open seams • Pressing is as important as stitching • ‘press as you sew’ allows projects to turn out nicer
Pins and Needles • Dressmaker pins: • Basic pins used to pin projects together • Very sharp points
Pins and Needles • Ballpoint pins: • Rounded ends • Great for knit fabrics that tend to roll up • Longer
Pins and Needles • Needles: • Come in a variety of shapes and sizes • Range in size from 1 to 12 • The smaller the number the larger the needle • Size 7 or 8 are most common for hand sewing, the are also called sharps
Pins and Needles • Pin Cushion: • Holds pins and needles • Has an attached emery bag that is used to sharpen pins and needles
Pins and Needles • Thimble • Prevents needle from pricking your finger
