REU Program Field Research in Brazil and Minnesota

An Initiative to Encourage the Participation of Native American Women in Geology • Program Highlights: • - Glacial Geology and Sedimentology • - Stipend supported 8-week program • Close Faculty Mentoring • June 24 to August 16, 2013 REU Program Field Research in Brazil and Minnesota Kim Greeley (Sisseton–Wahpeton Lakota) with Prof. Tony Rocha-Campos on Furnas fm. near Witmarsum, Brazil (REU 2007) Melisa Carnicle (Oneida Nation, Wisconsin) with Prof. Heidi Anderson studying a Late Paleozoic diamictite near Witmarsum, Brazil (REU 2011) The UMM REU program will nurture the development of 8 Native American women geology majors in both an international setting and in an environment where women and Native Americans are in the majority. The goal of the UMM REU research is to develop time-constrained models for two very different proposed paleo-ice streams. REU participants will study glacial deposits of the Late Paleozoic Paraná lobe of Brazil and Late Pleistocene age Des Moines lobe of Minnesota. In Minnesota participants will study surficial geology and unconsolidated sands and gravels while in Brazil they will study stratigraphy and sedimentary rocks. In addition to field and laboratory research students will discuss “thinking like a geologist” and issues in scientific ethics, meet role models who are professional geoscientists, and examine pathways to future academic and scientific careers.
