Mission • The Indiana University Digital Library Program (DLP) is dedicated to the production, maintenance, delivery, and preservation of a wide range of high-quality networked resources for scholars and students at Indiana University and elsewhere. • Organizational partners • IU Libraries • University Information Technology Services (UITS) • Research partners • School of Library and Information Science • School of Informatics • Strong user-centric approach California Digital Library
History • Created in 1997 to provide a common home for fledgling digital library initiatives • Separate from IU Library Information Technology (LIT) department • Conceived with system-wide responsibilities (8 IU campuses) • Grown consistently since inception • Involved in $8M in grant awards California Digital Library
Staffing • Funded by both libraries and UITS • Permanent staff • 3 librarians • 8 professional staff • 1 support staff • Grant-funded staff • 9 professional staff • .5 librarian California Digital Library
Many forces influencing our development • Moving from project-based model to a true “program” • Digital initiatives increasingly integrated into all library operations • IU Libraries administration currently in flux • Recent consolidation of reporting lines for DLP and LIT • Metadata as one of the first outreach areas • CDL model is interesting to us California Digital Library
A sampling of IU DLP initiatives • Wright American Fiction • Variations/Variations2/Variations3 • Charles W. Cushman Photograph Collection • The Chymistry of Sir Isaac Newton • METS Navigator • EAD creation and delivery • Redesign of DL infrastructure California Digital Library
Wright American Fiction • “Traditional” digital library project providing open online access to published materials • TEI encoding and page images of books from Lyle Wright’s bibliography, 1851-1875 • Began at IU, continued as cooperative CIC project • Delivered with DLXS Text Class • Project Web site California Digital Library
Variations Live April 1, 1996 Streaming audio MPEG 1 Layer II Experimental online scores in HTML Audio available only in Music Library Variations2 Research project 2000-2006 Streaming audio (MP3), digitized scores, encoded scores Pedagogical tools Metadata research Expanded access Variations/Variations2/Variations3 • Didactic purpose • Flagship projects • Variations3 • 2005-2008 • Generalize system for use at other libraries • More metadata research California Digital Library
Charles W. Cushman Photograph Collection • Online access to archival materials • Launched in Fall 2003 • ca. 15,000 color slides shot 1938-1969 • Faceted browsing • Integration of TGM I thesaurus structure • Public Web site California Digital Library
The Chymistry of Sir Isaac Newton • Faculty-led project • TEI and page images of Newton’s alchemical manuscripts • CDL’s XTF for TEI search and display • IU’s METS Navigator for image navigation and display • Public Web site • Project Wiki California Digital Library
METS Navigator • Software development project for use with multiple collections • Page turner interface written in Java • Runs off of structural metadata in a METS document • Intended to be used in conjunction with external search system • Source code soon to be released…really • Jane Johnson Collection is first production instance California Digital Library
EAD creation and delivery • Service provided to University departments • Lilly Library (rare books & manuscripts) and IU Archives staff encode finding aids with <oXygen/> using an IU template • Currently delivered with DLXS Finding Aids class • Soon to be delivered in XTF • Validation and submission system using Schematron currently in development • Public Web site California Digital Library
Redesign of DL infrastructure • Building systems around a Fedora repository • Should manage digital content of all types, but starting with still images and text • Likely will use XTF for searching • Some other core functions • Metadata creation • Thesaurus management • Digitization management • Preservation California Digital Library
