What was it? • The New Deal was the set of federal programs launched by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in response to the Great Depression.

Social security act • Provided assistance for low-income or disabled people • Today, it includes retirement income, Medicare and Medicaid, death survivorship benefits
Securities and exchange commission • Increased government regulation of the trading on stock exchanges • Created to protect investors
Minimum wage • Federal Labor Standards Act-established a minimum wage for workers • Didn’t apply to farmworkers • Last piece of New Deal legislation
The courts strike back… • Critics feared the “New Deal” gave the President too much power • “Threatened to alter the balance of power” • Against checks and balances • Schechter Poultry Corporation v. United States destroyed key parts of the NIRA • United States vs. Butler found a key part of the AAA unconstitutional • What effect did this have on Roosevelt and his New Deal?
Packing the courts • Roosevelt’s plan would give the President the power to appoint new judges and expand the Supreme Court • FDR wanted to make courts more efficient • Congress didn’t pass the plan. What did many critics think about this plan?
