  4. What was it? • The New Deal was the set of federal programs launched by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in response to the Great Depression.

  8. What to do first? • STEP 1: Roosevelt closes the nation’s banks and calls it a “bank holiday” • STEP 2: EMERGENCY BANKING ACT- Americans put money back into their own banks • STEP 3: FDIC is formed and gives insurance for savings accounts

  9. THE NEW DEAL (The three r’s) RELIEF RECOVERY REFORM • TO EASE THE SUFFERING • TO STIMULATE THE ECONOMY • TO PREVENT FURTHER ECONOMIC PROBLEMS IN THE FUTURE

  10. Social security act • Provided assistance for low-income or disabled people • Today, it includes retirement income, Medicare and Medicaid, death survivorship benefits

  11. Securities and exchange commission • Increased government regulation of the trading on stock exchanges • Created to protect investors

  12. Minimum wage • Federal Labor Standards Act-established a minimum wage for workers • Didn’t apply to farmworkers • Last piece of New Deal legislation

  13. The courts strike back… • Critics feared the “New Deal” gave the President too much power • “Threatened to alter the balance of power” • Against checks and balances • Schechter Poultry Corporation v. United States destroyed key parts of the NIRA • United States vs. Butler found a key part of the AAA unconstitutional • What effect did this have on Roosevelt and his New Deal?

  14. Packing the courts • Roosevelt’s plan would give the President the power to appoint new judges and expand the Supreme Court • FDR wanted to make courts more efficient • Congress didn’t pass the plan. What did many critics think about this plan?

  16. Results of the new deal • THE NEW DEAL DID NOT END THE GREAT DEPRESSION!!!! • Expansion of the power of the Federal Government • Government became more involved with the social and economic life of the people
