  4. Hinton used her initials to publish The Outsiders based on advice from her publisher. • The publishers thought male readers and reviewers might not accept this type of novel written by a woman. • Hinton decided to use her initials when publishing all her books.

  9. About The Outsiders • Class conflict between the Greasers and the Socs (short for Socials) • The Greasers are a group of lower class youths • The Socs are privileged rich kids who live on the wealthy side of town • The story is set in the 1960s in Oklahoma

  10. Characters • Ponyboy Curtis- 14 years old, the narrator of the story. He is the youngest of the Greasers. • Darry Curtis- Ponyboy’s oldest brother (20 years old). He is Ponyboy’s main caregiver. • Sodapop Curtis- the middle brother of the Curtis boys.

  11. What is a clique? • A clique is a small group of people, with shared interests or other features in common. • They usually spend time together and do not let others join them.

Identify as many groups or cliques that you know of to exist here at Warwick Valley Middle School. • What characteristics do the members of each clique have? • What tensions or conflicts exist between each clique? Why? • Why do you think these different cliques exist? • Do you ever think there will be a time in your life when you encounter a clique-less environment?
