Where Did Fagin Come From? Bob Fagin & John Dickens
Bob Fagin • When Charles started work at age 11, he met another young boy who he used to later create the character “Fagin” • Worked with Dickens at the Blacking House • Taught Dickens how to package pots
Bob Fagin = Fagin the Jew • Fagin taught Oliver how to pickpocket, just as Bob taught Charles how to wrap pots. • Both were good at what they did. • Both made their tasks fun.
Bob Fagin = Fagin the Jew (cont.) • Bob Fagin was bigger and took Dickens under his wing. • Fagin was older and took Oliver under his wing. • Friendship with either Fagin meant that the two boys; (Charles & Oliver) lostness & desolation would somehow become permanent, which neither wanted.
One more Fagin slide… • Both Fagins offered a friendship that Oliver and Charles needed, but the two boys were repulsed by the Fagins’ lower status.
Are the Fagins the same person? Although there are some similarities, the Fagin in Oliver Twist is a terrible old man and Bobby is not.
Who’s your Daddy? Fagin is!!!!
One day, Charles was working vigorously in the blacking factory when his father saw him in the window.
This incident in Dickens’ life came out in two scenes from Oliver Twist.
Scenes in Oliver Twist • Scene 1: The first night Oliver stays with Fagin. • Scene 2: When Oliver falls asleep at the Maylies and sees Fagin in the window.
Charles reacted to being seen by his father at the blacking house in a similar way to how Oliver reacts to being watched by Fagin.
“…the Jew as Devil and Anti-Christ, as the castrator and murderer of good little Christian boys, corresponds itself to this image of the terrible father…”
In case you weren’t listening… • Fagin ain’t Jewish (although he really is) • Bobby is like Fagin • Daddy is like Fagin • Fagin is bad • Dickens is our hero bonus points!
