  1. Energy Terms Renewable Energy Energy sources that can be replaced, or replenished.

  2. News • Yesterday, scientists finished decoding the DNA of a Wooly Mammoth. • Not used to make one with cloning, but instead used to understand how elephants have evolved.

  3. News • NASA is celebrating 10 years of the International Space Station. • 167 visitors, from 15 countries. • New Shuttles by 2010, retire the current ones! Obama

  4. Energy Terms Hydroelectric- Electricity being made by hydro-water

  5. Energy Terms Wood/Forests -Energy stored in trees in the carbon chemical bonds. Energy is old sunlight! Extra-(maple syrup)

  6. Energy Terms Photovoltaic- Electricity being made by converting Sunlight/Visible Light. Solar Panels

  7. Energy Terms Tidal Turbine- Energy production from the movement of ocean tides

  8. Energy Terms Wave Turbine- Electricity produced by the movement of waves.

  9. Energy Terms Bio-diesel- Fuel made from vegetables and grain

  10. Energy Terms Wind Turbine- Electricity produced from the conversion of wind.

  11. Energy Terms Non-Renewable Energy sources that once used, are non replaceable.

  12. Energy Terms Fossil Fuels • Ancient Stored Sunlight • Coal, Oil, Natural Gas • Considered the Catalyst for Accelerated Global Warming

  13. Energy Terms Coal- Energy Source made of preserved swamp ecosystems. Water/Mud preserved. Largest world-wide energy source for producing electricity

  14. Energy Terms Oil-Petroleum Naturally occurring liquid found in Earth, comprised of ancient Zooplankton and Algae, hydrocarbons(oceans)

  15. Energy Terms Natural Gas -Source of energy from swamps, marshes and landfills. Ancient to recent. Bondies Island

  16. Energy Terms Nuclear Power Plants -Energy produced by splitting atoms and using the heat to make steam and spin turbines

  17. Energy Terms Unsure?! These energy sources have potential to be either renewable or non-renewable

  18. Homework Hydrogen -Energy stored in the attractive bonds of Hydrogen gas. H2 want to be in a water state.

  19. Energy Term Conservation of energy- Law-Energy can neither be destroyed or created. All energy must be accounted for

  20. Energy Terms • Temperature- Average kinetic energy KE of the individual particle

  21. Thermal Energy • Total amount of Kinetic Energy from Particles. As Kinetic Energy of particles increases, so does the Thermal energy.(Heat Energy) The particles move faster.

  22. Energy Transfer Heat- Movement of Thermal energy from a substance at a higher temperature to another at a lower temperature

  23. Energy Transfer Conduction- Transfer of Thermal Energy, without particles moving. Transfer by touching, Direct Contact

  24. Transfer of Energy Convection- The transfer of energy by movement of Fluids. Earths mantle as well as water in a pot on the stove.

  25. Energy Transfer Radiation- Transfer of energy by or through EM Waves (Electromagnetic). Sun’s rays, hot lamps, tanning salon.

  26. Transfer of Energy All three in action! Camp Fire! Lava Lamp!

  27. Temperature Conversions Absolute Water Water Zero Freezes Boils F -460 32 212 C –273 0 100 K 0 273 373

  28. Phase Changes

  29. Bell Work #1 How would you Describe a Solid? • Packed together tightly in relatively fixed positions. Can Vibrate!

  30. Bell Work #2 How would you Describe a Gas? • Moving so fast that they do not stay close to one another. Expand to fill space!

  31. Bell Work #3 How would you Describe a Liquid? • Particles held together, but not so tightly that they can’t move past one another. No Shape, but Volume!

  32. All 5 Phases

  33. All 5 Phases • Solid, Liquid, Gas, Plasma • All Based upon the Amount of KE

  34. Energy Terms • Insulator-Nature of material and it’s particles is resistant to absorbing Kinetic Energy

  35. Energy Terms • Conductor-Nature of material and it’s particles transfers Kinetic Energy Easily!
