Key School’s ________________________________________________________________________________ Kilowatt Kickoff! ________________________________________________________________________________ By: Caileigh Feldman ‘10 & Jessica Greenwald ‘10
The Challenge… Discontinue purchasing the Key School’s energy from non-renewable sources (coal, other fossil fuels) and switch to a form of GREEN POWER (solar, hydro-electric, wind)
What is GREEN POWER? Electricity generated using renewable resources that have significantly less of a negative environmental impact than other energy resources Solar Water Wind
Why should the Key School buy GREEN POWER? • reduce environmental impact • prevent air pollution and reduce contribution to global climate change • conserve finite fossil fuels and resources • provide a financial hedge against unstable or rising fossil fuel prices • Green power offers a longer term fixed price
The steps we would need to take… 1) Reduce our kilowatt hour (kWh) usage in order to negate the cost of switching to a renewable energy source Average cost (per kWh) of current energy source: $0.118 Estimated cost (per kWh) of premium GREEN POWER: $0.142 % increase: 20% 2) Purchase GREEN POWER!
The Experiment… By isolating the month of April as a test trial, determine whether by simply altering behavior, the Key School community is able to reduce its kWh consumption by the 20% needed to balance the cost of purchasingGREEN POWER 96,741 kWh April 2007 total energy consumed: 77,393 kWh Goal for April 2008:
What is a kWh? Akilowatt houris the unit of measurement used to indicate an amount of (electrical) energy consumed and is equivalent to the quantity of energy required to power a 100 watt light bulb for 10 hours.
Food for Thought • The average U.S. household uses about: 880 kWh per month - or-10,656 kWh per year • The Science-Library Building alone uses: 22,538 kWh per month - or-293,000 kWh per YEAR! • Last year the Key School as a whole used a total of: 131,060 kWh 1,572,724 kWh per year per month
April-07 Total: 96,741 kWh
How can we help? Lighting Technology Heating/ Cooling
Lighting • If it’s sunny… TURN THEM OFF! • If you’re leaving… TURN THEM OFF! • If you notice a classroom, office or bathroom not being used with the lights on… TURN THEM OFF!
Technology We will be looking into automating the status of the computers around campus
Heating / Cooling • Thermostats will be adjusted • Keep classroom doors & windows closed
Help each other out! • Kindly remind your classmates and teachers of ways they can help! REMEMBER, WITH EVERYONE’S SUPPORT WE CAN REACH OUR GOAL OF GOING GREEN!
